Moped-Class Vehicles
Under the current set of laws in Manitoba, a moped-class bike is defined largely by two characteristics:
1) Engine Size < 50cc
2) Top Speed of 50 Km/hr
If you knowingly modify your moped-class bike to change either of these characteristics you are obligated to change your registration and insurance to a "motoscooter < 100cc" which is considered a type of motorcycle.
Accordingly, you must also possess a valid class 6 (motorcycle license) to drive it.
Failing to do this may result in a traffic violation for driving a vehicle without the proper license and/or incorrect registration.
Motorcycle-Class Scooters
Since insurance classification is based on engine displacement, you may need to have the registration and insurance class changed if you apply a modification to the engine displacement of your motorcycle-class scooter.
Currently, motorscooters are recognized in three engine size groupings:
under 100cc
Over 100cc but under 500cc
500cc or greater
So if you modify your motorcycle-class bike and it breaches one of those thresholds, you'll need to correctly change your insurance classification.
